Between the 800s and the 1400s, Amalfi was a major trading power in the Mediterranean, trading silks, spices, and numerous other goods with the Byzantines, Syria, and Egypt. After being invaded by the Pisans in the late 1100s, Amalfi slowly declined in importance, and its lower port was finally destroyed in a tsunami in 1343, causing
