many of these date from the 1940s

with the velvet face reminding me of old pin cushions I've seen

This seems to have begun its life in 1853 as an E. P Chase' s day book, but there is writing in it in a few different hands, and much of it from the 1880s, when E. P. or someone else took to using it to record the deaths of family members and friends and of the "old horse!" most of these having no relationship to the day
